Mosaic Magazine Hollywood Portrait

Portrait for an interview with film critic David Thomson, promotion for a new book, “Act Naturally.”

The goal is to create a portrait to sit alongside an interview with film critic David Thomson to promote a new book, “Act Naturally.” The client is not just looking for a straight portrait but more about the art of acting itself.

Anthony Hopkins the Composer

The interview mentions how Anthony Hopkins has a genuine appetite for acting. David Thomson also notes how he finds Anthony Hopkins quite admirable because he can do a bad film, finish it that day, then be ready to move on to the next, utterly unfazed by the failure. With this, he makes the comparison that Anthony Hopkins is that of a musician. He loves to use his instrument, in this case, his love of acting, and he loves to use this instrument every day.

“If he has played a poor piece of music one week, that doesn’t mean he won’t play a masterpiece the next” -David Thomson.

With this, I decided to create Anthony Hopkins as a composer. Capturing him as a composer instead of any specific musician brings the aspect of his care in creation. When he acts, it comes from a place of pure love and enjoyment, much as a composer would with their music. The music is being played within the piece, surrounding a calm, reflective atmosphere.
