Meraki Coffee Shop
Environmental design of a coffee
shop from two shipping containers.
This project was to create a shop with the main structure made from two shipping containers. The outside area has no limit; however, all interiors had to fit within the two containers. All aspects must be scaled to size for a realistic manner.

Sketches
I wanted to design a cafe for university students. The most important thing to me in these sketches is to maximize limited space, allow as much natural lighting as possible, and give plenty of room for students to sit while providing proper coverage from the elements.

Final Product
I decided to take an open-space approach to maximize the available area with the two shipping containers. This is a cafe designed to be on a college campus, so I wanted there to be lots of space where students could work within the cafe but have space not to be listening to loud bean grinding. Natural lighting was extremely important for this design. Students meeting with groups, working alone, or just needing a place to relax can benefit from beautiful views and ample outside seating on those especially nice days. Within the second-floor room, half-wall dividers can be found, so though who want a little more privacy can have an area to sit just for them. An elevator is included in this design for accessibility inclusion. The ceilings are clear to allow plenty of light and make the room feel more open, which is important for a small area. The color palette is also light to encourage this.
